This tutorial will guide you through the process of changing your start button, it is very important
that you follow all instrunctions carefully. So, the 1st thing you need to do is to download a program
called "resource editor". This is a hex editor which allows you to edit binary files. What we will do is use
this program to edit a backup file of "windows explorer" we will then edit the windodws registry to load the backup
of windows explorer rather than the real thing. I will guide you through this process carefully.
So, download the program from: Here Once you have downloaded that you are going to create
a backup of the file "windows explorer" this way, if you screw up, you still have a shell ;). To do this open up C:/windows, then find the file "windows
explorer" copy and paste that into some other folder such as "C:/backup" or something. Then MAKE SURE TO RENAME IT!
Now, open up resource hacker (the program we downloaded earlier). Hit file, open, then go to wherever the backup file of
windows explorer is, once you've opened up the file, the left collum should be filled with folders, click the "string table"
folder, then go to the folder under that called "37", Then under this folder, click 1033. The right screen should be filled up with
some text. The very top text should say "Start" click this, and change it to whatever you want. Once you have, click
"compile script" at the top, then click file, save, and your done, close the program.
Now, we're going to tell you computer to load the backup instead of the normal windows shell, "windows explorer" So, hit start, run,
and type in "regedit." Ok, a screen will come up, this is your registry editor. You can use it to change just about
anything, so, the left side should have a bunch of folders, click on HKEY_Localmachine, then click on Software, then click on microsoft,
then on Windows NT, then on current version, then highlight Winlogon, now, a screen on the right should come up with some more values,
scroll down until you see "shell" ok, minimized registry editor, go to your backup of windows explorer, and put it into C:/windows, then
maximize the program again and right click on "shell" then click "modify" then, instead of "windows explorer" put down the name of whatever
file you renamed "windows explorer" to. Then x out of the registry editor, and restart your computer.
If you boot up with a new start button, congrats, if you boot up without a start button, do not fret
simply hit ctrl +alt+del then click file....run, and type in regedit again, go back to teh shell, modify it back to it's original name,
"windows explorer" Then re read these directions and try again
